Bloodhounds: The Breed

For those interested in caring for a bloodhound, the bloodhound needs an area of their own where they can feel safe when you're away and where they won't get into trouble.  A fenced yard is a MUST with a bloodhound.  When a bloodhound is set loose, the nose hits the ground, the ears turn off, and off they go.  You can say good-bye to a loose bloodhound, because you will never catch him again.  When out for a walk, a bloodhound must be kept on leash.

All bloodhounds drool. They can sling it up onto your ceilings and all over your walls, cabinets, etc.  If you are bothered by drool, the bloodhound is not for you.

Like many purebred dogs, bloodhounds are prone to certain health problems. Some known problems to watch for are bloat, hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections and eye problems (entropian, ectropian). Sometimes, they can have skin problems because of the excess skin.
